Samuel Griswold Goodrich
Samuel Griswold Goodrich (spr. guddritsch),Schriftsteller unter dem Pseudonym Peter Parley, widmete sich dem Buchhandel und ließ sich, nachdem er 1824 Europa besucht hatte, in Boston nieder, wo er 1828-42 das illustrierte Jahrbuch Token herausgab, für das er selbst eine große Anzahl Gedichte und Erzählungen schrieb.
Seine weitverbreitete Peter Parley series of juvenile books füllt 177 Bände. Außerdem schrieb er:
- Fireside education (1838);
- The outcast, and other poems (1841);
- Sketches from a student's window (1841);
- A winter wreath of summer flowers (1854);
- Recollections of a lifetime (1857, 2 Bde.; neue Ausg. 1880) und
- Illustrated natural history of the animal kingdom (1859, 2 Bde.).
Unter dem Präsidenten Millard Fillmore bekleidete G. (1851) den Konsulatsposten in Paris. Er starb 9. Mai 1863. Seine Selbstbiographie ( Story of my own life) gab Freeman 1862 heraus.
